The Warmest Welcome to the Far East:
In a world where environmental responsibility has become paramount, it is refreshing to come across establishments that prioritize sustainability. I recently traveled to Southeast Asia (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and Singapore) for three weeks with my Executive MBA Cohort. But before joining the 80+ others who also made the journey, I first snuck off for a few days to the stunning Pullman Phu Quoc Resort on Phu Quoc island, located about 240 miles southwest of Ho Chi Minh.

This Accor property has made significant efforts to reduce its environmental impact. From their commitment to being nearly 100% plastics to their reuse of natural materials to support existing landscaping, this eco-conscious resort truly impressed me.
Aside from the amazingly beautiful grounds, top-notch service and enticing oceanfront, Pullman Phu Quoc is on the right side of the future in sustainability practices and far ahead of some of its competitors in the industry. The service excellence showed up in a major way when Hung Vo, Operations Manager for the resort, agreed to meet with me to discuss what his property is doing in terms of sustainability.
A Plastics-Free Paradise:
Pullman Phu Quoc understands the devastating effects of plastic waste on our planet and has taken remarkable steps towards eliminating single-use plastics from their operations. With a glass return program in place, they ensure that glass items are sent back to suppliers for reuse rather than being discarded. This commitment not only reduces plastic consumption but also minimizes overall waste generation.
So, we know there is a global crisis in our oceans and seafronts with respect to garbage and other debris. But what impact does this have to the GDP in Vietnam? A significant one. Vietnam relies heavily on its coastal resources for economic activities such as fishing, tourism, and shipping. Pollution from ocean and sea debris can lead to decreased fish yields, damage to marine ecosystems, and negative impacts on tourism.

This can result in economic losses affecting the GDP through decreased revenues from fisheries, reduced tourism income, and increased costs for cleaning up debris. Additionally, marine pollution may also impact public health and increase healthcare expenses. Therefore, addressing ocean and sea debris is essential for protecting Vietnam's economy and preserving its natural resources.

Using Corn Powder for Amenities:
Another notable aspect of sustainability at Pullman Phu Quoc is their use of corn powder for amenities. By sourcing this biodegradable alternative from a global supplier, the resort demonstrates its dedication to finding eco-friendly alternatives without compromising on guest comfort. It's heartening to see how even the smallest details are considered when it comes to reducing environmental impact.
Investing in Reusable Plastics:
While striving for a plastic-free environment is commendable, some situations may still require certain items made from this material. In such cases, Pullman Phu Quoc ensures these plastics are reused as much as possible before disposal becomes necessary. By implementing efficient recycling practices and encouraging guests and staff members alike to be mindful about their plastic consumption habits, the resort plays an active role in combatting the growth of single use plastics (SUPPs) pollution.
Strikingly Beautiful Landscaping and Environmental Solutions:
The Pullman Phu Quoc Resort is really going all out when it comes to its landscaping and sustainability. They're putting a lot of effort into making sure their grounds look amazing and that they're doing it in a way that's good for the environment. This means they're investing in making the place look fantastic while also being mindful about things like water usage, smart material reuse, and local ecosystems. It's all about creating a beautiful space that's good for the planet too.
The "So What" About Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

The sustainable development goals are all about getting companies to build sustainability into their plans, while also understanding how things like the environment, society, and governance are all connected to their success. There are guidelines in place to help organizations figure out what they need to focus on when it comes to being sustainable and then report on it. This helps them make sure that they're doing right by their shareholders and also focusing on creating value for the long-term instead of just making a quick buck. Making these changes might mean putting shareholder value first instead of chasing after profits every three months, talking with the people who matter most in their business, and dealing with environmental and social issues head-on. This kind of approach can help corporations make sure that they're thinking about more than just making money – they're also working toward a future where everyone has a fair shot at success.
